REUNION
Hollywood, are you okay? I was hesitant to watch this movie because it’s a blend of comedy and mystery—two genres that don’t typically mesh well. The movie stars Lil Rel Howery, who’s perfected the art of stealing the show. However, I have to ask: Hollywood, what’s going on?
The script was predictable, and there wasn’t a genuine mystery in the plot. Within the first ten minutes, the writers practically hand us the answer to the “whodunit.” Besides Howery, the only other recognizable face for me was Jillian Bell, who plays her usual quirky character. I’m not trying to be funny, but it felt like this was the casting team’s first rodeo; there wasn’t any real on-screen chemistry among the actors.
Now, don’t get me wrong—everyone deserves a chance to showcase their talents, update their reels, and get their paycheck. But this movie just wasn’t it. It was predictable to the point that I almost felt the stars were in it more for the check than out of passion for their craft.
One detail I couldn’t ignore: the movie doesn’t specify the year, so we’re left to assume it’s set in the present, which would be 2024. However, the characters are said to be the graduating class of 2001, meaning they’d be celebrating their 23rd high school reunion—something that’s never really been a thing in the history of reunions.
All in all, this movie felt like a lot of nothing and a lot of missed potential. I don’t want to give it two thumbs down or come off too negative, but I genuinely struggle to find redeeming qualities here. Aside from a few laughs from Howery’s character, there wasn’t much to enjoy. I’d give it a 4 out of 10. The production quality was decent, but the script and plot fell flat, especially given the talent involved. It feels like Hollywood executives need to rethink their green lights. Somewhere out there is a small-time writer with a better film idea who could have been funded instead.
No hate, just an observation. God bless!
