City of God: The Fight Rages On

I’ve waited 22 years for something to happen that I never knew was possible! A television spinoff of the greatest international movie ever, CITY OF GOD! I do understand that they made a City of Men tv show in Brazil and there was a 10-year anniversary of The City of God but The Fight Rages on is direct and special. I’m writing this review in full excitement although it’s a bummer that the first season is only six episodes. I’m not completely shocked because that seems to be the way the TV industry is headed as streaming becomes bigger and bigger. I’ve noticed a lot of shows only have 6 to 10 episodes per season, which sucks to see because a lot of of us grew up on sitcoms and television shows from the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s and these shows would have 24-to-28-episode seasons, the TV Studios were pushing out episodes for dang near half a year at times.

HBO/MAX did a really good job with the scenarios in the script for season one the way they were able to recast a lot of the original city of God, film is impressive. I love whoever came up with the idea of spinning off the movie, I only hate that it took them 22 years but on the other hand, the way the script is set up. It makes sense that we had to wait so long and now we see Rocket and the other citizens of the slums all grown up and still putting in work around their community. Although Rocket is the star of the show, the supporting cast have done such a phenomenal job that I think the audience has forgotten that the show is based around Rocket. I’d specifically like to mention Roberta Rodrigues who plays Berenice on the show, the writers gave her an assignment and she more than understood it. She stole the show from the first scene she walks into. In the original film her role was short now her role is strong, relevant, and a lot bigger. I know she was in the City of Men series and the 10-year anniversary of the City of God, but neither of those productions compare to what the Fight Rages On has given us.

I’d also like to spotlight Luellem de Castro, who plays Rocket’s daughter, Leka. Luellem’s character is very much a go-getter, a creative, and a rebel. The characters downfall is her temper but once she learns how to manage her temper and channel it to work in her favor, she’s on her way to greatness! I’m looking forward to watching her character develop and I’m hoping that she doesn’t allow living in slums to get to her, but she allows it to inspire her. All in all, I give this show 9 stars out of 10. The production of the show is A1, the translation from Portuguese to English is pretty good as well, on top of the script accuracy, and the believability of the storyline.
