David Makes Man (SZN 2)

W H O A ! I have so much to say about SZN 2 of David Makes Man. This show may have given us one of the best jumps from season to season. I couldn’t have ever predicted seeing what I saw from SZN 1’s end to SZN 2’s begin(bars). First of all, OWN did a sensational job with casting. The adults they casted to play the older version of the children from SZN 1 was pretty spot on. From Young David(played by Akili McDowell) to Adult David(played by Kwame Patterson) to Young Shella(Kimaya Naomi) to Adult Shella(Zsané Jhé). Can’t forget young JG(Cayden K. Williams) & Adult JG (Arlen Escarpeta). Okay so back to the show, the concept that the writers of SZN 2 used is very therapyesque & mentally appealing.

SZN 2 is basically setup to allow Adult David to reconcile his past relationships with everyone in his childhood, from his mom to his brother to his schoolmates to his neighbors. As an adult, David has a casual relationship with a woman named Nicole, played by the beautiful Brittany S. Hall (who also has perfect chompers). David’s past constantly comes back to haunt and disturb him, forcing him to figure out how to face his demons rather than run from them! In the SZN 2 finale David says “Don’t fight your demons, have them work for you!” & I couldn’t agree with that statement more. As someone who considers himself a mental health advocate I believe that statement packed a powerful punch because we’ve all had demons we’ve tried to fight and that battle is NEVER a breeze. I think it’s brilliant of David to ultimately has his demons work for him rather than him fight against them day in and day out.

A surprise breakout character for SZN 2 was Shella, David’s childhood neighbor and friend played by the beautiful Zsané Jhé. Shella is now the official-unofficial president of the Ville as their property manager and resident representative. Shella plays a huge role in bringing David back to earth as he’s apart of a disheartening plan to displace The Ville & its longtime residents. While Shella is fighting for her people and her residents, she also is fighting a battle of resisting JG, David’s younger brother who is married to another woman. There’s clearly some unfinished “business” between JG & Shella BUT Shella knows as long as JG is married that she has to resist and avoid JG as much as she reasonably can. Shella also continues to relive a traumatizing moment she witnessed happen to JG.

Also, JG and his wife Trisha (Played by the Queen Brandi Huzzie) have their own troubles brewing at home as they can’t seem to always agree on how to raise their teenaged daughter or handle JG’s family. JG & David’s mom Gloria(Played by the EVER SO GRACEFUL Alana Arenas) runs a foster home for runaway children of the LGBTQ+ community and it’s so fitting for her loving, caring personality. When JG & David were young kids Gloria wasn’t always present due to her addiction, forcing David to step up and be a man before he was of age. Gloria had to forgive herself for her lack of being present in her son’s lives and David had to forgive her for it as well because he was most effected by her being M.I.A some days.

I don’t want to give away anymore of the show or spoil any of the happenings but I do want to shoutout to show writers, OWN, the cast of DAVID MAKES MAN SZN 2, and everyone else who made this show possible because I can honestly say this is one of the best shows I’ve seen in a VERY long time! On a scale of 1-10 I give this show a 10 and HIGHLY recommend. If you’re healing from your childhood and/or looking for some sort of sign that you may need to heal from your past, this show is it! It also gives you another perspective of self-forgiveness and self-love as well—it’s needed within all of us, especially those of us who had a broken/traumatizing childhood! Do yourself a favor, forgive yourself. Forgive those who hurt you. Forgive those who harmed you. Forgiveness is for you so that you can grow and glow! Never forget that. If no one has told you lately I want you to know that I love you! Is this an unorthodox, different way to end a tv series review? Yep! Do I care? Nope! Do I care about my viewers & audience? Yep! I appreciate you even reading this far! Have a blessed day and stay tuned for the next review! From Hollywood Hill, With Love..
